Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has explained why he declined the opportunity to manage the Netherlands national team, insisting that he wishes to stay in club football. Slot engaged in discussions with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) regarding the vacancy but decided not to proceed with the process. The 47-year-old dismissed claims that his withdrawal was due to disagreements over salary or contract length, stating that they never reached that stage of negotiations.

Slot clarified that his decision was not influenced by his feelings towards the Netherlands or the KNVB, expressing immense respect for both. He emphasized that his preference is to work with a club team daily, which is not feasible with a national team. While he did not rule out the possibility of managing his country in the future, Slot deemed this moment unsuitable for him.

With Slot no longer in contention, former Portugal manager Roberto Martinez is now reportedly being considered for the vacant position.
