West Asia Crisis Pushes Up Edible Oil Prices In India, But Availability Remains Adequate: Govt Tells Parliament

New Delhi, August 12, 2026: The recent conflict in West Asia has caused a ripple effect across global and domestic edible oil prices, according to the Indian government's response to a query in Parliament. While the nation's local supply of edible oils remains sufficient, the increased prices are largely attributed to the international market dynamics driven by the crisis.

Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, the Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs, informed Members of Parliament that India depends on imports to meet a substantial part of its edible oil needs. As a result, domestic prices fluctuate with the global market trends. The geopolitical strife in West Asia triggered a surge in global crude oil prices, freight, and marine insurance costs, subsequently raising international edible oil prices.

Additionally, higher crude oil prices have led to a shift in the production of palm and soybean oil towards biofuel generation, which has decreased export availability and consequently, elevated both global and domestic edible oil prices. Despite these price fluctuations, Bambhaniya assured that adequate stocks of edible oils are available in the country, with imports from major supplying nations continuing uninterrupted through traditional trade routes.

The government is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to implement market intervention measures, such as reviewing import duties and other trade-related policies, if necessary. The overarching aim is to ensure the continued availability of edible oils and maintain stable prices for the benefit of consumers.
