Ukraine Strikes Russia’s ‘Last’ Black Sea Fleet Stronghold in Novorossiysk

Ukrainian Defense Forces launched a strike on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet stronghold in Novorossiysk on August 12, utilizing Palianytsia drone missiles, Neptune missiles, and maritime unmanned systems, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The attack targeted the base, which is located over 300 kilometers from the front line. Zelensky confirmed that the operation resulted in hits on air defense positions, piers, and seaport infrastructure.

The strike marks a significant blow to Russia's remaining naval presence in the Black Sea, as Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian naval assets following repeated attacks on Ukrainian naval infrastructure in occupied Crimea. This operation comes amid a recent disagreement between Kyiv and Washington regarding strikes around Novorossiysk.

US Vice President Joe Biden had urged Zelensky to halt attacks on oil tankers using the port, particularly those linked to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) carrying Kazakh crude. Ukraine maintained its stance, not targeting CPC infrastructure or non-Russian vessels unless sanctioned or carrying Russian cargo. Despite the agreement, Ukraine continued its attacks on Russian military infrastructure in and around Novorossiysk.

The Novorossiysk operation is part of Ukraine's larger campaign to weaken Russian military infrastructure far behind the front line. Kyiv has relied on domestically developed long-range drones and missiles to target Russian air defenses, naval installations, energy infrastructure, and military logistics. Zelensky emphasized that the operation demonstrated the vulnerability of Russian naval forces and infrastructure, stating that as long as Russia continues its aggression, the occupying fleet and supporting infrastructure will remain vulnerable. He also reiterated the Ukrainian position that diplomacy should be pursued to end the conflict.
