IMO Secretary-General statement on TIHAMAH

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent attack on the cargo ship TIHAMAH off the coast of Al Mokha, Yemen. The incident has resulted in the confirmed deaths of several seafarers. In a statement, Mr. Dominguez called the attack an indefensible act against international shipping and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

He emphasized the particular concern surrounding the recent attack in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden area. Mr. Dominguez reiterated his call for shipowners and operators to conduct thorough risk assessments before navigating these regions and to adhere to best management practices. He stressed that seafarers are entitled to safety and security while performing their duties and that such attacks only exacerbate tensions and jeopardize global supply chains.

Additionally, he urged for the immediate and unconditional release of all seafarers still held captive following piracy attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region, asserting that the safety of seafarers is a fundamental obligation under international law and a collective responsibility of the global community.
