Trump sued over sale of access to Truth Social posts

Two US media organizations filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump on Wednesday, alleging that his new service charging for early access to his Truth Social posts is corrupt and unconstitutional. The lawsuit, brought by The Intercept and the Freedom of the Press Foundation, claims the scheme is "extraordinary" and gives Trump a financial incentive to share potentially market-moving information with paying subscribers.

The accused service, known as Truth API, allows subscribers to receive near-instant access to Trump's posts on the platform, potentially giving them a significant advantage in reacting to news. The lawsuit states that subscribers can pay up to $60,000 per month for the service. The Intercept and Freedom of the Press Foundation argue that the fee-based access hinders their ability to accurately cover Trump's actions, which they say is critical to their reporting.

The lawsuit calls for the service to be declared unlawful and for Trump Media & Technology Group, the company behind Truth API, to block future posts. Several Democratic lawmakers have also called for an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which oversees US markets. Trump Media's interim CEO, Kevin McGurn, claimed the service is already generating revenue with 10 customer agreements signed, though he did not disclose the names of the clients.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that trading companies were among the first to subscribe to the paid service. In recent weeks, Trump Media has posted a significant increase in losses for the second quarter of 2026, linked to declines in the value of its digital assets. Trump and his close associates are accused of amassing billions of dollars through various ventures since taking office in 2024, including cryptocurrency trades, real estate deals, stock transactions, and payouts from lawsuits.

Forbes estimates Trump's net worth has grown from $2.3 billion to $6.5 billion during his second term.
