Remand prisoner attempts suicide inside Repalle Sub-Jail

On Wednesday, a remand prisoner at Repalle Sub-Jail attempted suicide by slashing his throat with a kitchen knife. V. Srinivasa Rao, arrested on July 5 for the murder of an elderly woman, had surrendered to the police and was in judicial custody. Upon entering the jail kitchen, Rao allegedly grabbed a vegetable-cutting knife and inflicted self-harm, bleeding heavily.

Jail staff quickly transported him to Repalle Government Hospital, where he was transferred to Tenali Government Hospital due to the severity of his condition. Doctors subsequently recommended a move to Guntur Government Hospital for better care. Srinivasa Rao reportedly sought relief from his distress over the lack of bail, with his family visiting him during his hospitalization.

The Repalle Town police registered a case and initiated an investigation based on a complaint from jail authorities. Superintendent of Police B. Umamaheswar explained that the murder case was being closely monitored, leading to the denial of bail and emphasizing the top priority given to cases involving the victimization of women.

The police were actively following the case through the district court monitoring cell, contesting all bail petitions filed by Srinivasa Rao in court.
