‘There could well be many more wives’: UP MLA ‘cheated’ by daughter’s in-laws

BJP MLA Gyan Tiwari of Sevta Assembly constituency in Sitapur has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against his daughter's father-in-law, Anuj Trivedi, alleging that Trivedi concealed a criminal past and had multiple marriages, each with a faked identity. This news emerged one month after Trivedi's arrest by Maharashtra Police, who are also probing similar charges against Trivedi's son, Prakhar, Tiwari's son-in-law.

Pragya, Tiwari's daughter and a doctor, and Prakhar, 31, were married in February 2024. The FIR accuses Trivedi of introducing himself as a real-estate businessman with operations in Mumbai and managing a school and agricultural activities in their village. Tiwari had conducted inquiries about the Trivedis before the wedding, but none of them raised any suspicions.

Now, the Maharashtra Police have registered a case in Thane, based on the complaint of a fifth woman, Savita Suresh Bhandarkar, who claims Trivedi cheated her and her daughter, Shambhavi, who has a mild disability. Bhandarkar alleges that Trivedi pretended to be 'Ajay Agarwal' and lured them into selling their flat and giving him money, jewelry, and Shambhavi's jewelry.

The Sitapur police suspect that Trivedi and Prakhar targeted vulnerable women, extracting money and valuables, and then disappearing. The Additional District Magistrate of Sitapur, Ayush Chaudhary, confirmed that a probe is underway, and the police intend to send a team to Maharashtra to get Trivedi's statement.
