Slot to stay in club football after Netherlands talks

Arne Slot, the former Liverpool head coach, has revealed he held discussions for the vacant Netherlands job but stepped away because he desires his next role to be in club football. The 47-year-old Dutchman led Liverpool to their 20th league title during his first season in charge, yet finished fifth in the Premier League and was dismissed on May 30. Ronald Koeman resigned from his second tenure as Netherlands coach after their elimination from the World Cup by Morocco in a penalty shootout in June.

Slot dismissed claims he terminated talks with the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) due to a contract disagreement. In recent weeks, numerous reports have surfaced, indicating he withdrew from the process after extensive negotiations, encompassing salary and contract length. Slot clarified to Voetbal International that these speculations were false; they had never advanced to that point in the negotiations.

Slot, who secured the Eredivisie title with Feyenoord in 2023, has not ruled out a future managerial role with the national team. However, at this stage of his career, he prefers being on the training pitch with his players daily, a prospect unattainable with a national side. Consequently, he opted not to proceed with the talks and negotiations regarding a potential contract. Slot expressed immense respect for the national team and KNVB, praising the professional conduct of the talks.

Currently, Slot believes club football still holds significant potential for him. He added, "It would be a great honor to represent my country as national coach someday. But this was not the right moment for me." Meanwhile, former Portugal manager Roberto Martinez is reportedly in discussions with the KNVB, according to Dutch reports.
