Slot pulls out of Netherlands talks to focus on club football

Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has confirmed he participated in talks for the vacant Netherlands job but withdrew from the process as he desires his next position to be in club football. The 47-year-old Dutchman led Liverpool to their 20th league title in his first season but finished fifth in the Premier League, leading to his dismissal on May 30th.

Ronald Koeman resigned from his second tenure as Netherlands manager following their World Cup elimination by Morocco in the round of 32 in June. Slot dismissed reports that he abandoned talks with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) due to a contract dispute. According to Slot, who spoke to Voetbal International, the speculation was untrue, as no stage of the negotiations took place.

The coach, who secured the Eredivisie title with Feyenoord in 2023, has not ruled out managing the national team in the future. However, he emphasized that his current focus is on playing club football, a prospect not feasible with a national team. Slot expressed respect for the national team and KNVB, praising the professional conduct of the talks.

For now, he believes club football still offers significant opportunities. Meanwhile, reports suggest that former Portugal manager Roberto Martinez is currently negotiating with the KNVB.
