Out of season, out of the ordinary: Australia meet Bangladesh in rare home winter tests

In an unusual and unprecedented move, Australia have announced a two-match Test series against Bangladesh set to begin in Darwin on Thursday, marking the first time the two nations have faced each other on Australian soil since 2003. The series will be played at Marrara Oval in Darwin and the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, with both venues hosting their first Test matches since 2004.

The decision to schedule the series in winter, rather than the traditional summer, is attributed to commercial realities and a packed international calendar. Australia's top Test squad, dubbed the "Fab Four" of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon, are all available for the tour, providing a rare opportunity for fans in the Top End to witness them in action.

While Cricket Australia is confident in ticket sales, the financial impact of the series is expected to be limited, as the organization faces ongoing challenges in growing the game. Despite this, Cricket Australia chief James Allsopp remains optimistic about the potential of winter Tests to broaden cricket's reach across Australia.
