Osun Election: Accord writes EU, seeks intervention for free, fair poll

The Accord political party has written to the European Union (EU), requesting intervention to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful governorship election in Osun State. The letter, signed by the party's national chairman, Chief Maxwell Mgbudem, highlighted the escalating tensions and political unrest in the state ahead of the scheduled poll on August 15, 2026.

Accord emphasized the significance of this election within Nigeria's electoral cycle, as it is the final major off-cycle governorship contest before the 2027 General Election. The credibility and peaceful conduct of the election are crucial to maintaining public confidence in the nation's democratic institutions and electoral processes.

Concerns were raised about incidents of political violence, arrests, harassment, and the deployment of state institutions, which heightened political tensions and generated apprehension among political actors and citizens. A total of 29 individuals reportedly lost their lives, and over 60 members and supporters of Accord were arrested, raising questions about the selective nature of actions by federal law-enforcement agencies.

The party also expressed concerns over the freezing of the Osun State Government's bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which was later unfrozen following public criticism. The party urged the EU to take notice of these issues and encourage Nigerian institutions to ensure that no political party, candidate, or citizen is disadvantaged through the misuse of state power or public institutions.
