NYSC distances self from NANS proposed N200 levy

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has firmly denied any involvement with the proposed N200 annual fee proposed by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). A spokesperson for the NYSC, Caroline Embu, issued a statement to clarify that the NYSC has no knowledge of, nor agreement with, the student body on the imposition of such a levy.

According to the NYSC, it is conducting mobilization for national service through official channels, involving the NYSC management and Heads of Corps Producing Institutions, who disseminate information on their graduates. The NYSC made it clear that this mobilization process is entirely independent of any activities by student associations or organizations.

The organization advised students and potential corps members to disregard any reports suggesting that they would need to pay NANS or any other student body in order to participate in the mobilization process. This clarification came in response to remarks made by NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde, who stated that his association was considering implementing an annual N200 fee for students.

Babatunde also indicated that NANS would collaborate with the NYSC and that students might be required to present proof of payment before being mobilized.
