This is a piece for the CSS Art Challenge focused on comfort food. When CSS said comfort food, the creator didn't envision restaurant platters or Sunday lunches. Instead, they thought about home, college, and friends wandering the city looking for something to eat. The aroma of a thela, a small street cart, drew them in before their brain caught up. The smell, steam, and queue are what spark inspiration for this project.
Chai, the drink for any time, is a staple in India. It's not just for mornings or special occasions. From preparing for study to winding down after a nap, chai is the go-to beverage. Cutting, full, adrak wali, elaichi - variations exist, but the essence remains the same. A sip and you feel rejuvenated.
Back home, a guest is offered chai at any gathering. It's a tradition, not just a drink. Every class, every profession, everyone has a chai thela they frequent. One thela owner even keeps a separate account for each regular. The ritual of chai is a memory, not just a beverage.
When people gather, they often share food. Pani puri, tangy, semi-spicy, and bursting with flavors, is a favorite. And the ritual of asking for two suki papdi after the last puri is non-negotiable.
