New Zealand PM Luxon survives leadership challenge months from election

Wellington - New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon survived a leadership challenge on Wednesday, despite his ruling National Party grappling with declining poll numbers. This was the second attempt to challenge his authority this year, with the first occurring in April. Luxon, who has been leading New Zealand since 2023, stated that he has the full support of his party following the closed-door discussions with party leaders.

He emphasized that the caucus is united and determined to win the upcoming election. Luxon's tenure as the prime minister has been marked with challenges, including the formation of a coalition government with New Zealand First and ACT parties. His political acumen has been questioned due to a series of gaffes and miscommunications, and his inability to maintain control over coalition partners has hurt his popularity.

Luxon's leadership has been further scrutinized for controversial statements and policies that have alienated key sections of his base. Despite these issues, Luxon managed to secure his position as the prime minister, with his party backing his leadership. However, polls suggest that some of his senior ministers might face challenges in retaining their positions when New Zealanders go to the polls on November 7.
