Nashik: MNGL, NMC Tighten Road Excavation Rules; ₹392 Crore Restoration Fee, GIS Mapping And Safety Measures In Focus

Nashik is experiencing a blame game between MNGL, the Smart City Company, and the Municipal Corporation over the poor state of city roads and complications arising from excavation work. MNGL had previously been accused by the municipal administration and the ruling party of poor excavation practices. In response, MNGL claimed that it is the Municipal Corporation's responsibility to repair the roads, having already deposited ₹392 crore with the corporation for road restoration.

Following a meeting between MNGL and the municipal administration, strict guidelines for excavation and road restoration have been established. Citizens are facing significant inconvenience due to the deteriorating condition of roads and excavation work for MNGL’s gas pipeline. In light of this, the Municipal Corporation has decided to adopt a more systematic approach towards these operations.

At a meeting at the Smart City office, discussions were held regarding MNGL’s gas pipeline excavation, subsequent road restoration, and the difficulties faced at work sites. It was emphasized that the project must be carried out with minimal inconvenience to citizens and to prevent further road deterioration. Mandatory measures include the installation of barricades and directional signage during work, implementation of safety measures, ensuring smooth traffic flow and uninterrupted daily movement for citizens, activation of MNGL’s customer service helpline within 48 hours for complaints, and provision of a detailed GIS map to the Municipal Corporation. This map will cover completed, ongoing, and proposed works.

MNGL will use saw cutters for road excavation, aiming for clean cuts and high-quality repairs. Concerns were raised about leaving debris on the roads after excavation, as it obstructs traffic, creates slippery conditions, and increases accident risks. MNGL agreed to ensure the immediate removal of debris following excavation work. It is anticipated that this meeting will improve coordination on road excavation and repairs, thereby reducing citizen inconvenience.
