My family of 4 took an expedition cruise in the Galápagos Islands. We travel often, but it was unlike anything we've experienced.

The author's family embarked on a weeklong expedition cruise to the Galápagos Islands, a unique travel experience that the family had never encountered before. Despite their love for travel, spanning over 25 countries and states, nothing prepared them for the encounters they had in the Galápagos. The islands are home to wildlife that has evolved with little fear of humans, making the experiences surreal and unforgettable.

The cruise began with a sea lion lounging on the dock at the boarding area, setting the tone for the rest of the trip. On an excursion at Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island, the family encountered a large marine iguana, blending seamlessly with the volcanic soil. Another highlight was a pod of about 300 dolphins that raced alongside the boat, so close that the daughters could have touched them.

Blue-footed boobies performing their mating dances and giant tortoises wandering through the highlands also left a lasting impression.

The landscapes of the Galápagos were just as astonishing, with each island offering a unique experience. Climbing the ancient volcanic slope on Bartolomé Island to the viewpoint overlooking lava fields and ochre spatter cones was a memorable adventure. Gardner Bay on Española Island offered a stunning white sand crescent against turquoise waters.

The unscripted time between excursions allowed for meaningful conversations about adaptation, conservation, and the impact of humans on the environment. The family bonded deeply, finding solace in the simplicity of being present together, away from distractions. One photograph, taken by another passenger, has become a cherished memory, capturing the joy and connection of the journey.
