‘The WNBA knows better than to play games down here in Florida’: Attorney General issues warning to WNBA

On August 31, 2025, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier cautioned the WNBA against conducting games in the state of Florida, following a controversial incident during a Chicago Sky vs. Indiana Fever matchup. The altercation occurred late in the first quarter when Carrington, a guard for the Chicago Sky, fouled Indiana Fever's Sophie Cunningham, causing her to be ejected from the game.

Cunningham claimed the hit was intentional, stating, "I don’t even know her. She wasn’t even on the team last year when all that was going on. But I do think when people play the Fever, we’re nationally televised, there’s a lot of eyes on us, and people just want attention. And that’s her just trying to get attention." In contrast, Carrington insisted that the foul was unintentional, asserting, "I’m never gonna let an open layup just be had."

In response, Uthmeier expressed his intention to prosecute Carrington for assault, stating, "The WNBA knows better than to play games down here in Florida, because I’ll be charging people with assault." When contacted by Fox News about his statement, Uthmeier clarified that he meant "assault and battery."

It is important to note that the WNBA currently lacks any teams in Florida, so Uthmeier’s warning will not immediately impact the league or the accused player.
