Moderate Crowley narrowly beats democratic socialist Hong in Wisconsin

In the Wisconsin Democratic primary for governor, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley won a close victory over Democratic socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong, according to the Associated Press. The Associated Press reports Crowley edged out Hong by about 3,000 votes, with 98% of the votes tallied. Crowley, who will be vying to become Wisconsin's first Black governor, highlighted his own humble beginnings as a moderate Democrat in the race.

Hong's campaign focused on her working-class background, as a single mother and former service worker who started as a dishwasher before becoming a successful restaurant owner. However, Hong faced criticism over her past positions and social media posts, including calls to defund the police and criticism of Thanksgiving as a racist holiday.

Notably, Hong did not receive endorsements from left-wing political figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who instead supported other congressional races. Crowley, on the other hand, received backing from top Democrat Governor Tony Evers, who touted him as the best chance for Democrats to win. The race also drew attention from Republicans, who saw Hong as a potential opponent in November.

Wisconsin's governor plays a crucial role in certifying election results, raising concerns about how Republican nominee Tom Tiffany, who questioned Biden's 2020 victory and supported lawsuits against election outcomes, might use the office if another tight election were contested.
