Meta youth safety trial kicks off in California

Jury selection commenced on Wednesday for Meta's federal trial in California, stemming from allegations that the company's platforms have harmed youth mental health and violated federal laws regarding data collection of minors. The trial, set to commence the following week, is anticipated to span six to eight weeks. Meta is facing 29 states in this multidistrict lawsuit, which was filed in 2023, but the Oakland trial will only encompass the initial four states - California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey.

Eight additional states, including Tennessee, have initiated lawsuits in their respective state courts. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Oakland, California, asserts that Meta routinely amasses data from children under 13 without parental consent, contravening federal law. Meta is alleged to have capitalized on potent and unprecedented technologies to lure, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teenagers.

The company's motive, according to the complaint, is profit, and in pursuit of maximizing its financial gains, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the significant dangers posed by its social media platforms. The complaint further alleges that Meta has concealed the methods by which these platforms exploit and manipulate its most vulnerable consumers: teenagers and children.

During jury selection, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers inquired about the prospective jurors' personal social media usage, familiarity with other lawsuits Meta is involved in, and any strong opinions they may hold about social media companies and their role concerning the allegations. This trial is part of a series of lawsuits targeting Meta Platforms and other social media companies, such as Google's YouTube, TikTok, and Snap, over claims that their platforms harm young people, illegally collect their data, and are engineered to addict them.

Earlier this week, a New Mexico court ordered Meta to pay $567 million to address the harms suffered by young individuals from its platforms in the second phase of a landmark trial. This sum is in addition to the $375 million in civil penalties that jurors imposed against Meta in March following a determination that the company knowingly caused harm to children's mental health and concealed its knowledge of child sexual exploitation on its platforms.

In the second phase, prosecutors are seeking to compel fundamental changes at Meta intended to curb addictive features, enhance age verification, and prevent child sexual exploitation through default privacy settings and enhanced oversight.

The states are demanding substantial penalties and modifications to Meta's methods of operating its platforms to ensure they are safer for children. Meta has consistently maintained that it has implemented numerous features to address these concerns. The company is appealing the New Mexico decision. In a statement, Meta asserted that they strongly disagree with the allegations and are confident that evidence will demonstrate their consistent commitment to supporting young people.

The tech giant further stated that they have listened to parents, collaborated with experts and law enforcement, and conducted in-depth research to understand the most pressing issues. They are proud of the progress they have made and are continually striving to improve.
