CCTV, live tracking, fire-safety systems mandatory for school transport vehicles in Pune

Pune district schools and transport operators must now adhere to stricter safety rules for vehicles carrying students, including mandatory CCTV cameras, vehicle location tracking devices, and fire safety systems, risk of licence suspension or cancellation if non-compliant. The decision was made by the Pune District School Bus Safety Committee at a meeting chaired by Sanjay Darade.

Schools and operators are required to use certified mobile or web-based apps for live vehicle tracking, digital attendance, automated alerts, and control access for parents, schools, and authorities. CCTV footage must be made available to parents and authorities within 30 days. Additional supervision is required for students up to Class 5 through a woman attendant or staff member, and special arrangements must be made for students with disabilities.

Schools have three months to comply with the new safety guidelines. The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) will soon fix school bus and van fares, which must not exceed 10 percent above or below the prescribed minimum fare. The School Transport Committee at each school will handle parent complaints related to school bus services, safety, and fares, submitting a report every three months.

Mandatory verification processes for drivers, attendants, and staff include character and medical examinations, with verification records to be maintained and submitted to authorities. Schools and operators will update their information on a designated website, including CCTV camera details and staff appointments. The education department will review the School Transport Committees' constitution and conduct joint inspections of vehicles transporting school students.

The primary goal is to enhance student safety and accountability among schools and transport providers.
