Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives commend Health Minister for clearing salary arrears

The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives in Ghana has lauded Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh for resolving the salary arrears of over 99% of the 13,500 nurses and midwives hired in 2024. The issue arose when these professionals started work without financial clearance, leaving the government in a difficult position. The Minister emphasized that instead of dismissing them, the government chose to retain their services while collaborating with the Ministry of Finance to secure the necessary funding.

Although a few isolated cases remain, the Human Resources Directorate has been instructed to expedite action on the outstanding cases. The Ministry also plans to hire 16,000 health professionals in 2026, with financial clearance already secured for the initial 8,000. The remaining 8,000 will follow suit before the recruitment process begins.

The Coalition expressed gratitude to the Minister and the Ministry for their continuous support in resolving their employment and salary concerns. Members expressed optimism that, with the payment challenges largely addressed, they would soon be known as the Coalition of "Dedicated" Nurses and Midwives.
