McGonigle drives in three to lead Tigers past Guardians 6-4

Kevin McGonigle contributed with three runs as the Detroit Tigers edged the Cleveland Guardians 6-4 in a game that marked the Tigers' first victory over Cleveland after an awful 0-6 start. The Tigers had lost two games of a June series, but currently stand 1 1/2 games ahead of the Guardians in the AL Central. Drew Anderson started the game and allowed only four hits, striking out four and walking two before Jacob Waguespack came in for two scoreless innings of relief.

Spencer Torkelson got the Tigers off to a quick start with a second-inning double, but Chase DeLauter's 13th homer of the year tied the game in the third. McGonigle's two-run double in the fifth inning ended the tie and put the Tigers ahead for good. Gleyber Torres added a run in the same inning with an RBI single. José Ramírez managed to score a run in the seventh, but the Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom half, extending their lead.

Javier Báez drove in the run with a stolen third and a throw that got away from Ramírez. McGonigle drove in the game's fourth run with an RBI single in the ninth. Kenley Jansen secured the win for the Tigers as their 14th save, although he allowed one run in the ninth. Tanner Bibee pitched 6 1/3 innings for Cleveland, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out four.

DeLauter went 3 for 5 in the game. The Guardians' next start will be against the Tigers' Framber Valdez on Wednesday.
