Messi affair: Argentinian team’s Kerala visit that wasn’t comes under scanner

The planned visit of Argentinian football star Lionel Messi and the national team to Kerala remains shrouded in mystery following a government inquiry. Sports Minister O J Janeesh revealed the findings of a departmental probe conducted by special secretary N Prasanth, which uncovered significant issues that necessitate investigation at a higher level.

Following the UDF government's ascent to power, the sports department initiated an inquiry due to the unfulfilled visit. Complaints were also received, prompting the department-level investigation, which has now been forwarded to the chief minister for further scrutiny.

The controversy intensified with allegations surrounding financial transactions, particularly the claim that sponsor Reporter Broadcasting Company (RBC) paid Rs 126 crore to the Argentina Football Association (AFA). The minister declined to comment on this aspect at present. Allegations abound regarding the financial transactions and whether the state government adhered to norms and regulations when inviting the foreign team to the state.

According to the minister, discussions on the visit were sparked by a letter sent to the state minister, which should not have been the starting point. The proposed visit, scheduled for November 2025, initially involved the sponsor RBC, but the AFA later announced it would not be traveling to Kerala. Former sports minister V Abdurahiman responded to the controversy, stating that the Left government had planned to bring the team to Kerala after adhering to all norms.

He asserted that the state government has not incurred any financial liability and that the deal was solely between the AFA and the sponsor in Kerala. The sponsor secured RBI sanction for the transaction, and both the Union Finance and Sports ministries provided the necessary permissions.
