Kota Kinabalu airport security needs a closer look, Sabah rep says after string of overseas drug arrests

Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) requires a thorough security audit according to Kapayan assemblyman Chin Teck Ming. The review should cover various aspects including passenger screening procedures, baggage screening technology, intelligence-led passenger risk assessment, and random and secondary screening procedures. Chin also suggested evaluating staffing levels during operational hours, training, and competency of screening personnel, coordination among enforcement agencies, and the need for additional manpower, equipment, and technology to meet international aviation security standards.

He emphasized the importance of making these findings public to assure Sabahans and all Malaysians that the international gateway maintains the highest level of security. Chin urged the government not to wait for tragedy before taking action, stating that security failures are often recognized only after disaster strikes. The recent string of drug-smuggling cases involving Malaysian travelers arrested overseas should be treated as a serious warning, he added.
