Kota Kinabalu airport security needs a closer look, Sabah rep says after string of overseas drug arrests

Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) security measures require thorough examination, according to Kapayan assemblyman Chin Teck Ming. The assemblyman proposed a comprehensive security audit that includes evaluating passenger screening procedures, baggage screening technology, intelligence-led passenger risk assessment, random and secondary screening procedures, staffing levels during operational hours, training and competency of screening personnel, coordination among enforcement agencies, and whether additional manpower, equipment, and technology are necessary to meet international aviation security standards.

Chin urged the government not to wait for a tragedy to occur, stressing the need to identify and rectify vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. He highlighted recent drug-smuggling cases involving Malaysian travelers who were arrested upon arrival overseas, including a Malaysian arriving from Bangkok with over 4kg of hydroponic cannabis at Chennai International Airport in India, and another Malaysian arrested in Indonesia for attempting to smuggle nearly 1kg of methamphetamine and over 1,000 ecstasy pills aboard a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Juanda International Airport in East Java.

Chin emphasized that airport security is not just a law enforcement issue but a matter of national security, as any weakness exploited today could potentially be used for terrorist activities in the future.
