Kevin McGonigle leads Tigers to first win over Guardians in 2026

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, the Detroit Tigers secured their first victory of the 2026 season against the Cleveland Guardians in a five-run win. Rookie Kevin McGonigle spearheaded the offensive effort with a two-out rally in the fifth inning, contributing a crucial two-run double and an RBI single. The Tigers, who had lost their first six games of the season to Cleveland, finally broke the tie and added two more runs in the seventh inning, with Javier Báez and Zach McKinstry reaching on walks, and Báez scoring on an error by reliever José Ramírez.

McGonigle closed out the inning with a single into center field, driving in his third run. Right-handed starter Drew Anderson lasted four innings, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks. The Tigers, tied for second in the AL Central with the Minnesota Twins, added their eighth win of the last 10 games, putting them three games behind the White Sox and one game behind the Texas Rangers in the AL wild-card race.
