Karnataka bans tobacco, nicotine products in historic move, plans to go addiction-free

In a groundbreaking decision aimed at improving public health, the Government of Karnataka has enacted a ban on the sale and distribution of tobacco and nicotine products, effective from August 10, 2026, for a period of one year. This historic move, announced by officials on Wednesday, aims to mitigate addiction and associated health risks by restricting access to these harmful substances.

The Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration, under the Health and Family Welfare Department, has initiated stringent enforcement measures, including special inspections and operations across the entire supply chain, from manufacturing to retail. The ban, issued by Commissioner Srinivas K, encompasses a wide range of products such as gutkha, pan masala, and other substances containing tobacco or nicotine.

Violators risk facing investigations and legal repercussions under the Food Safety and Standards Act. The public is urged to report any instances of prohibited products to authorities.
