June Floods: Minister for Climate applauds UAE for sourcing relief items locally

The Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability in Ghana, Alhaji Baba Seidu Issifu, expressed his gratitude toward the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for their prompt and generous aid following the recent flood disaster. The UAE's decision to procure essential relief items locally in Ghana rather than importing them has the minister believing it will benefit the Ghanaian economy.

Issifu praised the UAE's decision, stating that the items have been sourced directly from local markets, thus supporting the local economy directly instead of being shipped from the UAE. The minister highlighted that President Mahama had tasked him to seek international aid following the flood disaster, and the UAE's swift response has been a remarkable demonstration of the strong ties between the two nations.

The UAE has contributed with US$1 million in aid, which will be used to purchase a variety of relief items such as food supplies and emergency shelter materials. These supplies will be distributed to flood-affected areas in Ghana, including Klottey Korle Municipal Assembly. The minister emphasized that such international support is crucial in fighting the effects of climate change, which cannot be overcome by governments alone. He also expressed his hope that this gesture will inspire other countries to do the same.

Ghana's Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakie Quayson, welcomed the UAE's gesture, stating that it strengthens the longstanding and enduring friendship between their two countries. The National Disaster Management Organisation in Ghana also thanked the UAE for their support, emphasizing that the aid will bolster the country's efforts in responding to the flood disaster and aiding in recovery.
