Ipoh married couple charged with trafficking 480.6g MDMA, face death penalty

A married couple, Teoh Wai Loon, 44, and Lim Suk Pei, 38, appeared before the Magistrate's Court in Ipoh, Malaysia, charged with trafficking 480.6 grams of MDMA. The case was heard by Magistrate S. Punitha, who read out the charges, but neither party entered a plea, as the matter is under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The alleged crime took place at Room M333, The Pearl Orient Sdn Bhd, located in Bercham Bistari 4, Medan Bercham Bistari, Kinta district, on August 4 at approximately 10:30 pm.

The charges were levied under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, coupled with Section 34 of the Penal Code, with penalties including the death penalty or life imprisonment along with whipping if the death penalty is not given. The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Zulqarnain Wan Asmira, while the accused remained unrepresented.

The court has scheduled December 7 for a case mention to receive the chemical analysis report. On August 6, seven individuals, including the couple, were arrested by the police, suspected to be part of a drug trafficking syndicate active since June. Prior raids in Ipoh and Tapah led to the seizure of various drugs, including approximately 2.6 kilograms of MDMA, which is estimated to be worth RM538,451.

Additionally, three vehicles valued at RM224,000 and RM32,376 in cash were seized during the operations.
