Hong Kong baby food producer recalls pastas over rice weevil scare

A Hong Kong baby food manufacturer, Baby Basic, has chosen to withdraw certain items from sale to prevent potential customer exposure to rice weevils. The recall included specific varieties of instant baby congee with konbu salmon, and three types of instant rice-shaped pasta featuring flavors such as salmon and cream, tomato and chicken, and vegetable and beef.

All three pasta varieties have been temporarily halted in production as well. The company, which began operations in 2015, has offered refunds to customers who purchased these affected products and provided contact details for consumers to reach out via hotline or WhatsApp. The decision to recall the products was made following a report of the vegetable and beef-flavored instant rice-shaped pasta potentially containing the rice weevils.

Company officials emphasized that the precautionary move was aimed at providing parents with reassurance, as government food-safety tests had not yet established any health risks. Rice weevils are known to be a common contaminant in wheat-based ingredients and may infiltrate the production process from the initial stages through the use of raw materials.

To mitigate the risk of insect infiltration, Baby Basic has implemented color-sorting and vibration screening techniques to enhance the scrutiny of ingredients. However, the company acknowledged that rice weevils might still be present in the crops' growing environment, slipping past detection during screening and entering the manufacturing or packaging stages.

A parent's claim last month about her nine-month-old child nearly ingesting what appeared to be a cotton ball while consuming Baby Basic's instant baby congee in the konbu salmon flavor prompted the recall, but the Centre for Food Safety later determined that the object was merely plant material with common dietary fibers, devoid of any insects or foreign materials.

In an additional examination, the centre also tested roughly forty-five other samples of Baby Basic's baby food from the market, finding no abnormalities.
