FSU's edges are struggling to consistently stop the run

As the Florida State Seminoles prepare for another season, one area where they need to improve is their run defense. While the defense had its moments of success, it failed to stop the run consistently, particularly in the final game of the regular season. This lack of consistency proved costly, as Florida Gators running back Jadan Baugh rushed for 272 yards in a 40-21 victory that ended the Seminoles' season and prevented them from participating in a bowl game.

Baugh's 266 yards that day were the second-most in Florida history, with an average of 7.0 yards per carry and two touchdowns.

The issue with the defensive line lies in their inability to set the edge, a crucial aspect of stopping the run. New edge coach Nick Williams is working to rectify this problem, but he admits it remains a work in progress. Williams emphasizes the need for consistency, stating that the team often fluctuates between doing it well and poorly. He aims to instill this mindset in the players, focusing on details such as stance, eyes, and block recognition.

Williams appreciates that the team is self-critical and quick to correct mistakes, even before he can address them. This camaraderie and accountability among the players are refreshing for a coach, knowing everyone is invested in improving their performance. With just over two weeks until the season opener against New Mexico State Aggies, the Seminoles have ample time to work on their consistency. However, they will face a tougher challenge when they take on SMU Mustangs in their following game.
