Earliest-ever harvest for France's Champagne region after heatwaves

LILLE, France — The Champagne region of France has initiated its earliest grape harvest in recorded history, following a series of intense heatwaves that hastened ripening, according to industry officials. Harvest opening dates, which typically fall between August 8 and August 22 depending on location and grape variety, have been announced by David Chatillon, co-chairman of the Comite Champagne industry association.

The early opening dates can be attributed to the soaring temperatures this year, which have accelerated the ripening process, as Chatillon explained. Since the 1980s, harvest dates in France have been gradually shifting earlier, serving as a notable indicator of climate change. In Champagne specifically, the grape picking now begins approximately two weeks sooner than it did two decades ago.

Chatillon noted that the quality of the grapes remains satisfactory despite a fourth consecutive year of reduced sales quota due to global economic uncertainty and recurring climate-related challenges. Additionally, the agriculture ministry has granted an exceptional permit to Champagne producers to purchase additional grapes for the current season.
