Earliest-ever harvest for France's Champagne region after heatwaves

LILLE, France — France's Champagne region has begun its earliest-ever grape harvest after a series of intense heatwaves hastened ripening, according to industry officials. The announcement of the official harvest dates, which precede harvesting without special permission, signifies the earliest on record, stated David Chatillon, co-chairman of the Comite Champagne industry association.

The opening dates for the harvest span from August 8 to August 22, varying by location and grape variety. The exceptionally high temperatures this year have expedited the ripening process, commented Chatillon.

Harvest dates across France have been gradually advancing since the 1980s, serving as a reflection of a warming climate. In Champagne specifically, the grape picking now commences roughly two weeks sooner compared to two decades ago. Chatillon expressed satisfaction with the quality of Champagne's grapes despite the reduced sales quota for the fourth consecutive year, caused by global economic uncertainty and recurrent climate-related risks.

This year has also witnessed the agriculture ministry granting an exceptional permit to Champagne producers to purchase grapes for the harvest.
