DRC Ebola cases surpass 4,000 as officials warn of fastest spreading outbreak on record

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported a staggering 4,449 confirmed Ebola cases, resulting in 2,061 deaths, according to government data. Health officials have labeled this outbreak as the fastest-spreading on record. Confirmed cases have been identified in five provinces. Factors such as delayed detection, ongoing conflict, and strained health services have contributed to the virus's rapid spread.

This is the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DRC and is caused by the Bundibugyo species, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, as it has also resulted in cases in neighbouring Uganda. A study published in the journal Science suggests that transmission may have begun as early as January or earlier, identifying over 500 suspected cases between mid-January and May 15.

The current outbreak is significantly more severe than previous outbreaks. For context, the 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa saw 28,616 cases and 11,310 deaths across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. In that outbreak, it took nearly five months from the declaration for the death toll to reach 1,000, whereas the current outbreak has reached that milestone in less than three months.

The 2018-2020 DRC outbreak took just over 12 months to reach 2,000 deaths. In the current outbreak, deaths have surged from 1,000 to 2,000 in less than a month, highlighting the alarming speed at which the virus is spreading.
