Chawinga sisters score in Malawi’s 3-1 WAFCON semifinal win over Algeria

In RABAT, Morocco, Tabitha Chawinga scored two goals and her sister Temwa added another, leading to Malawi's 3-1 semifinal victory over Algeria at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations. This marked Malawi's first appearance in the tournament, as they were ranked 153rd in the world. Algeria was adversely affected when Morgane Belkhiter received a red card after fouling Tabitha Chawinga in the 23rd minute.

Tabitha Chawinga, who plays for Lyon in France, gave Malawi the lead in the 33rd minute with a strike that ricocheted off the crossbar and into the goal. Temwa Chawinga, for Kansas City Current in the NWSL, scored her fifth goal of the tournament in the 85th minute, overcoming the Algerian goalkeeper to put Malawi ahead. Despite Rose Kadzere being sent off in the second half for a challenge on Marine Dafeur, resulting in both teams playing with 10 players, Temwa Chawinga sealed the win with her second goal in the 76th minute.

The losers of the quarterfinals, Nigeria and Ghana, will face South Africa and Ivory Coast respectively in Casablanca on Thursday in hopes of advancing to an intercontinental playoff.
