6 Free spots in the UAE to watch Perseids meteor showers

Dubai: Meteor showers are spectacular celestial events that can be seen with the naked eye. However, finding a suitable location is crucial, as city lights and restricted areas make it difficult to observe the phenomenon. The Dubai Astronomy Group has identified six authorized spots in the UAE for stargazing during the Perseids meteor shower.

1. Al Qudra Desert in Dubai: Located about an hour from central Dubai, this site is easily accessible by car and offers free entry. The Dubai Astronomy Group recommends this location due to its proximity to facilities such as food trucks and toilets, making it suitable for families with children.

2. Al Quaa Milky Way spot in Abu Dhabi: Approximately 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi, this location is the darkest and most accessible in the country. It is named for its ability to reveal the galactic core on moonless nights, but the journey and terrain may be challenging for some stargazers.

3. Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah: Situated around two hours from Dubai, this mountain peak provides a higher altitude, cooler temperatures, and a clearer view of the sky. The observation deck and rest areas offer convenient access points, with the mountain road well-maintained and lit in certain spots.

4. Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve in Dubai: As the largest unfenced conservation area in the country, this site offers free entry and a darker sky than expected due to its proximity to the city. The area also shares its location with Al Qudra, providing open desert terrain without long drives.

5. Wadi Shawka in Ras Al Khaimah: This rocky valley with a dam is popular among hikers during the day and offers a peaceful night sky experience. The terrain is rocky rather than sandy, and visitors must stay near the dam to avoid venturing into privately owned land after dark.

6. Mleiha in Sharjah: Located about 40 minutes from Sharjah city, this archaeological site features a free surrounding desert area where visitors can enjoy stargazing without guided events. The Mleiha Archaeological Centre offers organized stargazing evenings with dinner and expert guidance, but these activities come at a cost.
