527 rescued as Madhya Pradesh hit by incessant rain; CM reviews situation

In the past three days, relentless rainfall has inundated several districts in Madhya Pradesh, prompting the state's Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav, to review the ongoing rescue operations. As of Tuesday, August 11, 2026, a total of 527 individuals had been saved from the flood-prone regions, according to Mr. Yadav.

The Chief Minister himself visited the Home Guard headquarters in Bhopal and reviewed the situation through a virtual meeting at the State Disaster Management Situation Room. He directed officials to deploy rescue teams, including the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), Home Guard, and local police, to assist those affected by the severe weather.

Although the El Niño effect has caused rainfall to be 15% less than average, certain areas still experienced heavy downpours, leaving people and farmers stranded. Mr. Yadav highlighted that rescue efforts continued even during nighttime hours, with food arrangements being made for those trapped at their homes.

Among the districts most impacted by the floods are Rajgarh, Shivpuri, Raisen, Bhopal, Sehore, Ujjain, Mandla, and Mauganj. In Khandwa, seven Kanwar yatri were rescued on Monday after they became trapped due to a sudden rise in water levels.

To ensure effective coordination, Yadav urged officials to collaborate across neighboring districts where multiple rescue operations were required. He also considered the deployment of air ambulances if necessary. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of people exercising caution in areas near water bodies and advised them to avoid traveling in risky locales.

Tragically, nine lives were lost in Rajgarh's Sarangpur area on Monday when a van was swept away while attempting to cross a bridge on a swollen drain. Mr. Yadav expressed deep regret over this incident, noting that the region had received nine inches of rainfall on Sunday night. He appealed to the public to refrain from venturing into hazardous areas.
