GBV: Durban woman allegedly assaulted and strangled by her boyfriend

A tragic murder has occurred in Durban, South Africa, where a 43-year-old woman, Zodwa Prudence Magwaza, was allegedly assaulted and strangled by her boyfriend in her home. The victim, who is a mother of two, was found with assault wounds and reportedly collapsed at her neighbor's doorstep before passing away. The incident took place in the Cornubia Housing Scheme, north of Durban, where Magwaza had recently been relocated as part of the municipality's flood victim relocation program.

Magwaza had been experiencing domestic abuse from her boyfriend, according to the police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda, who confirmed the case of murder. The provincial police spokesperson added that Magwaza tried to seek help but collapsed at her neighbor's doorstep and ultimately died. The community is outraged by the incident, with some members threatening the accused to prevent them from returning to the area.

The Domestic Violence Advocate Rory Macpherson, who visited the family, emphasized the importance of speaking out against abusive relationships and urged for support for the family. Macpherson also highlighted the broader issue of gender-based violence, stating that it remains a significant challenge in South Africa, with a need for sustained action beyond the criminal justice system.

He emphasized that many violent crimes, including 898 murders during the quarter, are rooted in social and cultural factors, including gender inequality and toxic notions of masculinity. The police minister, Firoz Cachalia, revealed that alcohol abuse is a contributing factor in many violent crimes, as it was linked to 7,267 incidents of murder, attempted murder, rape, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm during the quarter.
