Tafo Zongo residents accept losses as new road takes shape

Residents of Tafo Zongo in the Ashanti Region have accepted the loss of several structures as a new road project progresses. The structures, including a shop owned by Saeed Zakari, a school, and mosques, were cleared to make way for an 800-metre road corridor along a previously undeveloped route. Mr Zakari built his shop for over GH¢20,000, but he believes the road will benefit the community by improving access and boosting the local economy.

Many residents are supportive of the project, citing difficulties in accessing the area due to lack of road infrastructure. Ibrahim Hussain, for instance, noted that vehicles struggle to reach certain parts of the Zongo, especially during emergencies. Yussif Sumaiya also expressed concern about inaccessible areas behind his home.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Old Tafo, Abubakar Sadiq, explained that the exercise aims to improve planning and mobility while reducing traffic congestion on the main Tafo-Mampong road. The Assembly's special planning committee identified encroachments on the community's right of way in specific electoral areas, leading to the demolition of structures.

The project is expected to be followed by road construction, which may take six months to a year, depending on the procurement process. Residents are urged to remain patient and allow the demolition and construction to proceed smoothly.
