Shelter lowers pet adoption fees as capacity issues push rescues to find solutions

Canadian animal shelters are taking steps to address capacity issues, and some are lowering pet adoption fees to encourage adoptions. In Mississauga, Ontario, the city's animal shelter held an adoption event Aug. 8 to 22 with reduced fees for dogs and cats at $25 plus HST, compared to the normal cost of about $280 plus HST for dogs and up to $190 for cats and kittens.

Shelter manager Greg Madeley explained that while the shelter cares for animals until they find a home, a permanent home is preferred. The event is open to everyone over 18 years old, and the adoption process includes interviews, meet-and-greets, and ensuring the potential owner understands the financial responsibility.

Halifax shelter Bide Awhile is also experiencing a surge in adoption demands, with staff stating that they sometimes have no animals available for adoption. Shelter co-ordinator Sam Cole said that the increased adoption requests have led to a low return rate for adopted pets, as they match the animals to homes based on the prospective owner's lifestyle and needs. Cole advises that people should consider their own lifestyle when deciding on an adoption, as a busy individual might not be suited for a high-energy dog.

Toronto's Mattie's Place rescue, a medical rescue, highlighted the importance of thorough research before adopting. Founder Denise Angus advised prospective pet owners to look into the breed they want, associated costs, insurance, and potential emergencies. She emphasized that adopting is a lifelong commitment and urged people to make an informed decision, involving their families if necessary.
