Opposition MPs failed 10 million TH depositors by walking out, says Syed Saddiq

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has criticized his party for abandoning the parliamentary discussion on the Tabung Haji Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report, arguing that the action has put over 10 million depositors at risk. He emphasized that lawmakers should remain in the chamber to examine the findings and safeguard depositors' interests rather than exiting due to the Prime Minister's absence.

Syed Saddiq urged the opposition to engage in meaningful debate and expose any wrongdoing, expressing disappointment that the party, known for advocating Malay-Muslim interests, decided to boycott the debate on an institution critical to the community. He clarified that the opposition's absence isn't a boycott of the Prime Minister but rather a refusal to abandon their responsibilities to the depositors.

While acknowledging Anwar Ibrahim's response to the concerns about the government's management of TH and its recovery plan, Syed Saddiq maintained that the Prime Minister's unwell state does not justify sidelining the rest of the MPs. He stressed that Parliament is not solely the domain of the Prime Minister, and all MPs must fulfill their duties.

Syed Saddiq proposed the formation of a multi-agency task force comprising enforcement bodies to investigate the troubled investments, urging the probe to be broadened to include Felda, FGV Holdings Bhd, and the Eagle High plantation deal. He also advocated for accountability against those responsible for the TH's issues, urging Malaysians to remain vigilant beyond partisan disagreements.
