Nobel Peace Prize for Gaza’s children? Italian proposal sparks backlash

A proposal to give the Nobel Peace Prize to the children of Gaza has sparked controversy in Italy. The idea was put forward by Professor Eugenio Mazzarella, a philosophy professor from Naples, who wrote an article in the Catholic-affiliated newspaper Avvenire. Mazzarella argued that awarding the prize to all children, rather than one individual, would draw attention to the "terrible condition" of minors killed daily in Gaza due to the ongoing conflict.

His petition garnered support from thousands of Italians, clergy, and organizations. The proposal was met with strong criticism from the Jewish community in Italy, who argued that it ignores the victims of other conflicts and contributes to moral apartheid. They called for a Nobel Prize to be given to child victims of war, including Israeli, Ukrainian, and Sudanese children.

The proposal also faced backlash from left-wing Italian politicians, who accused it of inflaming antisemitism. The Nobel Prize rules state that the prize can only be awarded to living individuals, and the Peace Prize can be given to organizations. However, Professor Mazzarella may still rely on a clause that allows him to recommend a candidate working for the welfare of Gaza's children.
