Mindef channels RM275.4m to MAF veterans’ welfare programmes this year

The Malaysian Ministry of Defence (Mindef) has allocated RM275.4 million, or 90% of the RM303.3 million granted to the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), to support veterans' welfare programmes this year. In a press release, Mindef outlined that the funds will be directed towards five primary areas: welfare, health, housing, education, and socioeconomic empowerment.

To date, several initiatives have been undertaken. The cost-of-living assistance for veterans has been broadened from serving 15,000 recipients to 33,655, while over 281 veterans have received medical equipment and disaster relief. Moreover, funeral management assistance has been extended to more than 1,600 veterans. Additionally, Mindef has focused on the health and well-being of veterans, supporting more than 4,738 recipients with expenditures surpassing RM38 million as of June.

The ministry has also approved 34 new housing construction projects and 323 home repair projects for MAF veterans. Furthermore, education support for the children of veterans will continue, including school assistance and aid for those pursuing higher education. Socioeconomic empowerment of veterans is being addressed through partnerships with various programmes, such as the Veteran Entrepreneur Empowerment Programme, IPR INTAN Programme, MyHero Tani Programme, and second-career opportunities under the Veteran MyWira Programme.

Mindef also presented the Madani Veteran Care Programme (PVM) in Merlimau, organised by JHEV, which aims to visit and assist MAF veterans, widows, and families with disabled spouses or children. During this visit, the team assessed living conditions and provided targeted assistance, including home repairs, medical equipment, cost-of-living aid, and daily essentials.

The programme serves as a platform for strengthening ties between Mindef and the veteran community, with feedback used to improve future policies and welfare programmes.
