Marion County Election Board removes Lindsey Cornett from IPS school board ballot after challenge

The Marion County Election Board has removed Lindsey Cornett from the Indianapolis Public Schools school board ballot due to her voting record, while allowing her opponent Chris Bultman to remain in the race. Both candidates were running for District 4, which is on the ballot because of the resignation of board member Allissa Impink.

Cornett and Bultman, both Democrats, faced challenges over their party affiliation being listed on the ballot. The Marion County Election Board's decision could set a precedent for future challenges regarding partisan school board candidates in Indiana. Cornett's challenge was filed on July 1 by registered voter Bryan Regules, who questioned whether she had voted in two Democratic primaries.

Cornett conceded that she voted in only one primary but argued that it should not disqualify her from the ballot. The election board followed guidance from the Indiana Election Division and the interpretation of the bill author in making their unanimous decision to remove Cornett but keep Bultman on the ballot. Bultman, who was recently appointed to the IPS board, argued that his voting record met the law's requirements.
