Trump’s ex-lawyer Blanche sworn in as AG

Former Trump attorney Todd Blanche has been sworn in as Attorney General on Monday after a contentious confirmation battle. The oath of office was administered by another former Trump lawyer, now a federal appeals court judge, Emil Bove at the White House following the Senate's narrow confirmation vote.

Blanche, a former federal prosecutor in New York, steps into the role of Attorney General following the resignation of Pam Bondi in April. He will now have to manage the Justice Department, which he has been leading in an acting capacity, amidst mounting criticism and pushback from the courts.

The confirmation process saw Blanche narrowly confirmed with a 50-49 vote, with two Republican senators opposing him due to concerns over the increasing politicization of the department under Trump. Under Blanche's supervision, the DOJ has conducted investigations against several Trump critics, including former FBI Director James Comey, who was indicted for the second time under Trump's presidency.

Blanche has vehemently defended the Trump administration against accusations of weaponizing the Justice Department. He maintains that he feels no pressure to placate Trump and asserts that the president's interest in the department's matters is both his right and duty. Blanche gained access to Trump when he served as his defense lawyer in multiple criminal cases, including two brought by the Justice Department under President Biden.

Blanche's nomination faced opposition due to a controversial settlement of his lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service. He had to confirm in writing that the administration was rescinding the plans for a $1.8 billion fund to compensate Trump allies who felt wronged by the department. Despite these challenges, Blanche believes his close relationship with Trump as his defense lawyer could prove more effective in resisting the president's demands.
