Malaysian held in Chennai after 4kg of high-grade hydroponic cannabis seized

A Malaysian national has been arrested at Chennai International Airport after attempting to smuggle 4.033kg of high-grade hydroponic cannabis. The incident occurred on Friday night when the suspect arrived from Bangkok and was randomly selected for inspection by the Air Intelligence Unit of Chennai Customs. The suspect tried to leave the airport via the Green Channel without declaring the drugs to customs authorities.

Upon X-ray scanning of the passenger's luggage, suspicious images were detected, leading officers to conduct a thorough search. Four packages containing the illicit substance were found concealed in the bottom compartment of the luggage, weighing a total of 4,033 grammes. The narcotics were positively identified through a narcotics detection kit, and the contraband was subsequently seized under Section 43(a) of India's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.

The Malaysian suspect was arrested and brought before a court, which remanded him in judicial custody. Indian authorities are now investigating to determine if there was involvement from a larger network or other parties in the alleged smuggling attempt.
