Malaysia ready to strengthen defence ties with Iran, says Mohamed Khaled

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Malaysia is prepared to enhance and deepen defence collaboration with Iran, rooted in their strong friendship, according to Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. This sentiment was expressed during a recent telephone dialogue with Brigadier General Seyed Majid Ebn-e-Reza, Iran's Acting Minister of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics.

Khaled announced Malaysia's anticipation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation, aiming to formalize the relationship. He further expressed hope that Iran would partake in the upcoming Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), which could serve as a venue to broaden ties and explore additional defence cooperation.

Addressing the tragic loss of Iranian leaders, security personnel, and civilians during the West Asia conflict, Khaled conveyed Malaysia's sympathies. The minister hoped that a ceasefire could be sustained and that dialogue and diplomatic resolutions would remain prioritized for regional peace and stability. He also commended Iran's resilience, highlighting its self-developed defence capabilities.

Khaled appreciated Iran's cooperation and favorable treatment during the conflict, emphasizing the necessity to preserve the security of maritime routes, including the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
