Berlin, Germany - Dirk Stöckmann, a former miner, has been working for network equipment provider Cisco for 25 years. He began his career as a system engineer in 2001, specializing in data center technologies shortly after. Stöckmann also worked as a technical solution architect in a data analysis group. He holds one of the most prestigious IT certifications, CCIE, which only 100,000 people worldwide possess.

Stöckmann celebrated his 25th jubilee as a Hypershield Solutions Engineer, responsible for developing security architectures for AI-based IT systems to enhance the protection of data centers and cloud environments. His current salary is in the six-figure range.

Stöckmann attributes his success to continuous learning. He emphasizes that those choosing a career in IT should be curious about technology and willing to learn continually. He notes that the AI era has made this even more crucial. Almost every industry is experiencing the profound impact of AI, particularly IT. AI can write code, analyze data, identify errors, and test software – all tasks previously performed by human experts.

A Bitkom survey conducted among 850 companies revealed that eight out of ten believe the labor shortage in the IT sector will worsen. Additionally, 42% anticipate AI creating additional demand for specialists. However, around 27% expect AI to lead to job losses, and nearly one in four companies report that candidates do not meet specific new technology requirements.

So, what do IT professionals need to bring to the table today? Which profiles are becoming more important, and which are losing significance? The Handelsblatt spoke with experts and heard from companies.
