Gachagua: Ruto’s 4 years marked by insecurity and rising cost of living

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has lambasted President William Ruto's administration, saying it has overseen a breakdown of law and order, increased insecurity and an escalating cost of living. During his "Ruto at Four" speech, Gachagua highlighted the challenges Kenyans face under the current government. The four-year term under President Ruto has left Kenyans struggling with insecurity, high taxes, rising utility and transport costs, and a lack of employment prospects, Gachagua stated.

The former deputy president detailed the administration's shortcomings in maintaining law and order, alleging that security agencies have been misused against civilians and political opponents. Gachagua also criticized the misuse of armed individuals in roles that should be reserved for legitimate security forces. Additionally, he raised concerns about extrajudicial killings, including the murder of Dr. Victoria Mutiso.

Economic difficulties faced by households were another major point of contention for Gachagua. He pointed to cumulative tax charges, high utility costs, transport expenses, and a stagnant job market that has limited formal employment opportunities. Rising fuel prices exacerbated the economic pressures, leading to higher transport and food costs, which in turn strained household incomes.

Gachagua also noted the closure or exit of companies from the Kenyan market, attributing the trend to the challenging economic environment. As Gachagua seeks to bolster his political standing ahead of the 2027 General Election, his sharp criticism of the Ruto administration is expected to intensify the political rivalry.
