Esiovwa-Thompson opens up on England for Nigeria switch

Seventeen-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson's decision to switch from representing England to Nigeria was driven by his desire to pursue Olympic glory, according to the teenager. He etched his name into history by becoming the first Nigerian to clinch gold at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in the men’s U-23 epee event held at Rugby School Nigeria. The young athlete's triumph was achieved by defeating three Indian opponents in successive rounds, with his proud grandparents cheering him on from the sidelines.

The path leading to Esiovwa-Thompson's gold medal victory was paved with years of representing England, where he had amassed several medals. However, his allegiance shifted as he expressed his longing to fence for Nigeria, stating, "There's always been something in me that longed to fence for Nigeria." He clarified that his decision was influenced by the fact that he grew up in England and knew representing Nigeria better suited his Olympic aspirations.

The hard work, sweat, and tears that went into his preparation paid off, as he secured the historic gold medal, an achievement he described as a reward for his dedication.
